a16zcrypto Raises $2.2B Fund, Pivoting to Crypto Amid AI Hype
a16zcrypto, a prominent VC firm in the crypto space, has announced the raised of its fifth fund, totaling $2.2 billion. This brings the firm's total raised to date to $9.8 billion. Despite the current slowdown in crypto trading and growing interest in AI startups, a16zcrypto remains committed to blockchain-related investments.
In a recent blog post, a16zcrypto outlined its vision for the future of crypto, emphasizing the potential for a "new financial system" and warning about the risks of "opaque" AI. The firm also promoted its CTO, Eddy Lazzarin, to General Partner, bringing the total number of GPs to four.
The timing of this announcement is somewhat ironic, given the current state of the crypto market. Coinbase, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, recently announced layoffs affecting 14% of its workforce. March saw the slowest trading-volume month across crypto exchanges since November 2023, according to CoinGecko.
VC investing in crypto startups has also cooled, with Q1 2026 seeing nearly $5 billion in investments, compared to closer to $6 billion in the year-ago quarter, reports DLNews, citing stats from DefiLlama.
Despite this, a16zcrypto's partners remain optimistic about the potential for blockchain-related startups. They note that much of what gets built during a downturn is "usually more useful than it looked at the peak, and more durable than it looked at the trough."
However, the firm's focus on crypto may be put to the test as bigger VC funds like Paradigm and Y Combinator begin to explore AI-related investments. Paradigm is reportedly working on raising a fresh $1.5 billion fund to expand its thesis into robotics and AI, while Y Combinator hasn't asked for any crypto-related startups in its most recent "Requests for Startups" list.
Even so, a16zcrypto remains committed to its focus on crypto, with a spokesperson assuring TechCrunch that the firm will be "dedicated 100% to crypto entrepreneurs.
