Amazon's Zoox Prepares for Commercial Robotaxi Launch
Amazon-owned Zoox is preparing to launch commercial robotaxi rides in the United States, marking a significant milestone in the development of autonomous vehicles. This move comes after Zoox secured an exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to operate a fleet of up to 2,500 vehicles commercially for two years.
Zoox's Commercial Robotaxi Launch: A Game-Changer for AV Industry
Zoox's commercial robotaxi launch is a significant step forward for the autonomous vehicle industry. The company's custom-built robotaxis have been giving rides to passengers in Las Vegas and San Francisco, and now it's expanding to Miami and Austin. With this exemption, Zoox can now operate commercially, paving the way for other autonomous vehicle developers.
"This exemption is a win for Zoox, but it also paves the way for any other autonomous vehicle developer that wants to launch a robotaxi that lacks a steering wheel, pedals, or other requirements that might not be needed in a vehicle with no human driver," said Kirsten Korosec, Transportation Editor at TechCrunch.
