Unlimited Chats Arrive for Free Users
OpenAI's ChatGPT just got a major boost, as the platform now offers unlimited text chats for all users, following its 1 billion weekly user milestone.
OpenAI is rolling out the new GPT-5.6 Luna model, which will serve as the default model for free and Go users. This model replaces GPT-5.5 and promises to provide a more robust and accurate chat experience.
One of the exciting new features introduced alongside this update is the 'Think' button, allowing users to select higher reasoning power for complex questions. The company notes that there will still be limits in place for files, images, voice, and image generation.
Upgrade for Plus and Pro Users
ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers are also receiving an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, ideal for quick tasks such as questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and making decisions. The new model is designed to provide more compact and robust answers.
A key feature for Plus and Pro users is the thinking slider, enabling them to adjust how much thought the model puts into an answer. This allows users to tune their queries based on complexity and steps involved in solving a query.
Improved Accuracy
Internal evaluation by OpenAI found that compared to GPT-5.5-Instant, factual errors were 62% less common for GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common for GPT-5.6 Sol. The updated GPT-5.6 Sol model is now available to Plus and Pro users, while the other changes for free and Go users will arrive later this week.
In the following week, users can expect to gain access to unlimited text chats and the new Think button for harder questions.
