Insider Trading Allegations Rock Google and Prediction Markets
Google software engineer Michele Spagnuolo has been charged with insider trading by the U.S. Justice Department, sparking concerns about the integrity of prediction markets like Polymarket.
The allegations claim Spagnuolo made over $1.2 million in trading profits on Polymarket using confidential business information related to Google's 2025 Year in Search marketing campaign. This marks a significant blow to the company's reputation and raises questions about the responsibility of employees with access to sensitive information.
According to the complaint, Spagnuolo accessed internal Google Search data about the most-searched celebrities to inform his bets on Polymarket. He risked over $2.7 million on wagers related to the campaign, allegedly using a tool available to all employees to access the confidential information.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, stated, "As alleged, Spagnuolo violated the duties he owed to his employer and used Google's confidential business information to make more than $1.2 million in trading profits on Polymarket." Clayton emphasized that insider trading compromises the integrity of markets and will be investigated and prosecuted.
Prediction markets like Polymarket, Kalshi, and others allow users to bet on various events. However, insider trading is strictly prohibited on these platforms, as it is illegal. The Justice Department recently charged a U.S. Army soldier for allegedly using insider knowledge to make $400,000 on Polymarket.
Polymarket has worked closely with law enforcement and regulators to maintain transparent and fair markets. The company has cooperated with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the CFTC, leading to the first insider trading charges in the United States related to a prediction platform.
A Google spokesperson stated that the company is working with law enforcement on the investigation and has placed Spagnuolo on leave. The employee accessed confidential information using a tool available to all employees, but using such information to place bets is a serious breach of Google's policies.
The incident highlights the importance of maintaining confidentiality and adhering to company policies, particularly for employees with access to sensitive information. As the tech industry continues to evolve, it is crucial for companies to prioritize transparency and accountability to prevent similar incidents in the future.
