Google's AI Assistant Gemini Nears 1 Billion Users
Google is on the cusp of adding another billion-user product to its list, which already includes Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome. The company's AI assistant Gemini has reached 950 million monthly users, according to its Q2 2026 call.
"Users love new agentic features like Daily Brief and our personalized agent, Gemini Spark, which is now available in the U.S. and internationally. We’ve been shipping helpful new features like this at an incredible pace," Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said during the call.
Gemini's Rapid Growth
Gemini's user base has tripled in just a year, with the app crossing 750 million monthly active users in February. The growth is not limited to Android users, with the Gemini app finding a strong user base on iOS. According to AppFigures, the app has been downloaded over 137 million times on iOS in the last 12 months.
- In its latest "State of AI" report, analytics firm Sensor Tower noted that ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants fell below 50% for the first time.
- Gemini's share rose to 27.7%, indicating a significant shift in the market.
Google Search Continues to Thrive
While Gemini is gaining traction, Google's search vertical is also going strong. The company reported that its Q&A-style AI mode crossed 1 billion users, driving an "incremental increase" in search queries. Google has also reduced the cost of AI mode through hardware engineering, despite introducing new models and features.
The Battle for AI Supremacy
The competition between Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT is heating up. With Gemini poised to reach 1 billion users, the battle for AI supremacy is far from over. As the two companies continue to innovate and improve their respective AI assistants, one thing is clear: the future of AI is looking bright.
