Google's AI-Powered Gmail Search Takes a Conversational Turn
Google's AI Inbox expansion adds conversational AI features to Gmail, making it easier for users to find information in their inboxes.
Google's latest move to infuse AI into Gmail is a significant step towards simplifying the search process for users. The tech giant announced the expansion of its "AI Inbox" functionality, which includes conversational AI features. This means users can now ask Gmail about things in their inbox instead of typing in search terms.
The Gemini AI-powered feature, called Gmail Live, aims to help users quickly find information buried in their inbox. This could be useful in scenarios where users need to access details about upcoming flights, dentist appointments, or other important events.
Before, users would have to type in keywords in the search box or type in someone's email address or domain to narrow down their search. However, this approach often falls short, especially when the search term is something found across several messages.
"Gmail Live can answer naturally phrased questions, respond to follow-up questions, and pivot if you need to interrupt it," said Devanshi Bhandari, product lead for Gmail.
This feature is another example of how Google is showcasing the practical applications of its AI technology. By making it easier to find information in the inbox, Google is highlighting the value of AI in real-world scenarios.
Bhandari demonstrated Gmail Live to reporters, asking the tool a series of questions about things in the inbox, such as a child's show-and-tell project and their class trip, plus hotel and flight information for a trip to Detroit. The demo showed that Gmail Live can understand nuances between similar topics and jump from one topic to another.
The AI can also pull granular details from emails, like a hotel room number, or infer which people you're asking about, even when they're not explicitly named.
Gmail Live is not replacing traditional Gmail search – it's just another option. Google may have learned this lesson from its "upgrade" of Google Photos with AI-powered search, which received significant backlash.
Gmail is also gaining other new capabilities, including ready-to-send drafts, instant file access, and the ability to manage to-dos by marking individual tasks as done.
The AI Inbox experience, which launched earlier this year, will expand beyond Google AI Ultra subscribers to reach Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers as well. This allows users to see an overview of the tasks and items to catch up on that are buried in their inbox, all on one page.
However, the voice-powered Gmail Live feature will roll out later this summer and will initially be limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
