Google's AI Pioneer Jeff Dean Embarks on New Venture
Dean, along with fellow co-founders Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals, is leaving Google to launch Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on harnessing AI to accelerate scientific research.
With a combined expertise spanning decades, the team aims to leverage high-octane algorithms and massive computational scale to automate the research process, thereby expanding its scope and efficiency.
"Discovery Loop is developing advanced AI systems that leverage massive computational scale to fundamentally transform the speed and efficiency of innovation by automating complete experimental loops," the company said in a press release.
This startup seeks to overcome the traditional bottleneck of slow, sequential human iterations that hinder scientific progress, and instead, rely on AI to initiate and iterate thousands of experiments simultaneously.

Initial funding for Discovery Loop comes from a coalition of investors, including Alphabet, Radical Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, and Doerr Capital.
-
The company plans to apply AI to accelerate scientific discovery, a field that has gained significant attention in recent years.

Led by Jeff Dean, who has contributed to Google's core infrastructure and played a key role in the company's early AI research, Discovery Loop aspires to deliver transformative technologies to the world far sooner.
"We think there is opportunity for AI to more fully automate what has traditionally been a very human-intensive experimental loop," Dean told the New York Times. "You will get both a higher quantity and a higher quality of experiments, and that will lead to scientific breakthroughs and advances."
With the potential to revolutionize the scientific research process, Discovery Loop's ambitious goal is to accelerate the pace of innovation and deliver groundbreaking discoveries to the world.
