Google's Gemini App Gets a Major Overhaul at IO 2026
Google's Gemini App is Getting a Makeover
At its annual Google I/O event, Google announced a series of updates to its Gemini app, aiming to make it a more comprehensive AI hub. The updates include a 'Daily Brief' feature, a redesigned interface, and access to a new AI video model called Gemini Omni, underscoring the company's push into multimodal content creation and AI-powered tools.
The Daily Brief feature is a personalized digest that organizes information from a user's inbox, calendar, and most important tasks into a clear overview. It also prioritizes tasks and suggests next steps, with the most important items shown first. The feature is rolling out today to Google AI subscribers in the United States.
The Gemini app has a considerable reach, with over 900 million monthly users and availability in over 230 countries and in more than 70 languages. However, Google wants to make it more competitive with apps like ChatGPT and Claude, which also offer AI-powered services.
Redesigned Interface and New AI Video Model
The Gemini app has been rebuilt from the ground up with a new design language called 'Neural Expressive.' This brings fluid animations, vibrant colors, new typography, and haptic feedback. Key information in Gemini's responses is now presented in bold at the top, with additional text and possibly other elements like images and timelines appearing as the user scrolls down.
Gemini Omni is a new AI video model that combines Gemini with Google's generative media models to create outputs grounded in knowledge. It lets users upload audio, images, and video to generate a consistent, high-quality video, according to Google. The model is rolling out to Google Flow and YouTube Shorts for Google AI subscribers, underscoring the company's broader push into multimodal content creation and AI-powered video tools.
Gemini Spark: A 24/7 Personal AI Agent
Google has also introduced Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent that helps users navigate their digital life. Spark transforms Gemini from an assistant into an active partner that does real work on behalf of the user. Since it's a cloud-based agent, Spark keeps working in the background even when the user locks their phone. With Gemini Spark, users will be able to create their own custom workflows.
Spark is currently in testing and is expected to be available to Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.
A Competitive Landscape
Google's updates to the Gemini app signal its push to make the AI assistant more competitive with apps like ChatGPT and Claude. The company's move into multimodal content creation and AI-powered tools is intensifying competition in this space, with major players like Nvidia, Intuit, and SpaceX also making significant bets in this area.
