WhatsApp's New Chapter in India
Meta is betting big on India for WhatsApp's next phase of growth, naming entrepreneur Kunal Shah to lead the messaging app. Shah, who founded Indian fintech giant CRED, will succeed Will Cathcart, who is stepping down after nearly seven years at the helm.
A Strategic Move for WhatsApp
India is WhatsApp's largest market, with over 500 million users, and the country has emerged as a key battleground for Meta's ambitions in business messaging and digital payments. Cathcart, who has led WhatsApp since 2019, oversaw a period of rapid expansion, but the service struggled to replicate the scale and engagement achieved by local rivals in digital payments.
"Meta is betting that Shah's experience building a consumer internet company in India can help unlock WhatsApp's next phase of growth," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
CRED's New Investor
Meta is also investing $900 million in CRED, a fintech platform with 17 million monthly active users. The deal values CRED at about $4.5 billion on a post-money basis and makes Meta a minority investor in the startup. Shah will retain his shareholding in the company after stepping away from day-to-day operations.

A Prominent Figure in Indian Tech
Shah has become one of India's most prominent startup investors, backing over 250 companies and serving in advisory and industry leadership positions across the country's technology and financial services sectors. He founded CRED in 2018, and the startup has gained significant traction in India's fintech landscape.
"Shah has built CRED into one of India's most important technology companies," said Zuckerberg. "He has the builder mentality and global perspective needed to run the world's largest messaging app."
A New Era for WhatsApp
The appointment of Shah as WhatsApp's new leader marks a significant shift in the company's strategy, with a focus on expanding its services beyond messaging. Meta is seeking to expand WhatsApp's business in areas such as payments, commerce, and business communications, and India is central to these efforts.
