OpenAI Takes Aim at Anthropic with Codex Revamp
OpenAI has announced a significant update to its Codex tool, aiming to give it a competitive edge in the AI coding space. The move comes as the company seeks to regain its position as a leader in the industry, following a series of challenges from Anthropic.
Codex Gets a Boost with Background Operation
The revamped Codex now allows users to operate in the background on their computer, opening any app on their desktop and carrying out operations with a cursor that clicks and types. This feature enables users to deploy multiple agents, which work in parallel without interfering with their own work in other apps.
Functionally, what this does is allow Codex to deploy multiple agents, all of which work on a user's Mac "in parallel, without interfering with your own work in other apps," the company said in a blog post.
The agentic update is designed to make Codex a more multifaceted tool that can be integrated into various corporate workflows. OpenAI lists "iterating on frontend changes, testing apps, or working in apps that don’t expose an API" as potential use-cases for this kind of agentic assistance.
New Features and Updates
- In-app browser: allows users to issue commands to the agentic tool, which it will then carry out on specific web applications.
- Memory: a new feature in preview that allows Codex to recall previous work sessions and generate important context about how a particular user works.
- Image-generation ability: enables users to create product concepts, slide visuals, mockups, placeholder images, and other corporate paraphernalia.
- Plugin integrations: 111 plugins from apps like CodeRabbit and Gitlab Issues, which allows Codex to carry out tasks involving those tools.
Pay-as-You-Go Pricing Option
OpenAI has also announced a new pay-as-you-go pricing option for ChatGPT enterprise and business customers, giving users more flexibility when it comes to procuring the coding tool's services.
Competition Heats Up
The move by OpenAI comes as the company faces increasing competition from Anthropic, which has been making strides in the AI coding space with its Claude Code tool. Anthropic's tool has been dubbed the "tool of choice" for many businesses, and OpenAI's revamp of Codex is seen as an attempt to regain the top spot.
OpenAI's move to beef up Codex is a significant development in the AI coding space, and it remains to be seen how it will impact the industry. One thing is certain, however: the competition between OpenAI and Anthropic is only going to get fiercer in the coming months.
