OpenAI Challenges Anthropic with $100/month ChatGPT Pro Plan
Power users of ChatGPT can now access a more affordable Pro plan, while Anthropic's Claude Code subscribers face a potential price increase.
OpenAI has made a significant move in the world of AI-powered chatbots by introducing a $100/month Pro plan for ChatGPT. This new tier is geared towards supporting daily usage of ChatGPT's coding tool, Codex, and aims to challenge Anthropic's $100/month option for Claude.
The new Pro plan offers 5x more Codex than the Plus plan, which remains at $20/month. However, it's worth noting that the highest tier, previously priced at $200/month, is still available, according to OpenAI. The model maker confirmed that this highest tier is still accessible, despite being removed from the pricing page.
The new $100 Pro Tier is designed to give developers more practical coding capacity for the money, especially during high-intensity work sessions where limits matter most. Compared with Claude Code, Codex delivers more coding capacity per dollar across paid tiers, with the difference showing up most clearly during active coding use.
An OpenAI spokesperson emphasized that the Pro plan is ideal for developers who need more coding capacity, particularly during intense work sessions. They also highlighted the significant growth of Codex usage, with over 3 million people globally using the tool every week, a 5x increase in the past three months.

The company promises that the $200 plan offers 20× higher limits than Plus, making it suitable for "your most demanding workflows continuously, even across parallel projects."

Both Pro plans offer the same core features, with the main difference being the rate limits.
It's worth noting that OpenAI's new pricing tier is only a temporary measure, as the company plans to revisit the pricing structure after May 31. During this time, users on the $100 plan will have access to even higher limits of Codex.
