Superhuman's AI-Powered Auto-Draft Feature Takes a Step in the Right Direction
A game-changer for inbox management?
Superhuman, the email client acquired by Grammarly last year, has launched a new version of its auto-draft feature that uses AI to categorize emails and create draft replies. This feature has the potential to revolutionize the way we manage our inboxes, especially for those who receive thousands of emails every month.
The new auto-draft feature is designed to identify important emails and create draft replies that sound less robotic. In my experience using the feature, I was able to send emails with little to no editing for some generated drafts. The app understands which emails might need replies and drafts a response based on your tone from previous conversations.
One of the standout features of this new implementation is its ability to learn from your usage and improve responses. For instance, after the midnight meeting debacle, when someone suggested a similar time, the feature generated a draft saying that the timing doesn't work for me. This level of personalization is a significant improvement over earlier features like Instant replies, which were built from older models like GPT-3.5.
The feature is far from perfect
While the new auto-draft feature is a significant improvement, it's not without its flaws. By default, it often generated a positive response to a pitch, or agreed to a meeting at a post-midnight time. Thankfully, I could select another response from the other variations quickly and send it away.
Personalization is key
Users can personalize emails by heading to Settings > Personalization and adding details about themselves and their role, along with adding files or links for more context. This level of customization is essential to making the feature work effectively.
The future of inbox management
Superhuman's co-founder, Rahul Vohra, said during the testing phase, 40% of auto-generated drafts were sent within one day, and 60% of those were sent without any manual editing. This level of efficiency is a significant step forward in the evolution of inbox management.
In conclusion, Superhuman's new auto-draft feature is a game-changer for inbox management. While it's not perfect, it has the potential to revolutionize the way we respond to important emails. With personalization and a willingness to learn from user feedback, this feature could be the key to unlocking a more efficient and effective inbox management system.
