Talent Wars Erupt in Autonomous Vehicles, With Base Salaries Reaching $300,000 to $500,000
The self-driving vehicle industry is facing a talent war, with startups and automakers competing for engineers with salaries ranging from $300,000 to $500,000.
The ideal candidate has hybrid skills, a mix of classical robotics and AI know-how, making them highly sought after. This talent war is pushing base salaries to unprecedented levels, with defense tech startups being the most generous. The Department of Defense's open wallet is allowing these startups to offer high compensation packages, making it difficult for automakers and startups to retain their top talent.
According to Kirsten Korosec, a transportation editor at TechCrunch, the ideal candidate has a mix of classical robotics and AI know-how. She notes that defense tech startups are the most generous when it comes to compensation, thanks to the Department of Defense's open wallet. Jobs looking for an applied researcher or AI enablement engineer are hot tickets right now, with companies fighting over talent.
"We're definitely working on a couple of really cool ideas," said Jiten Behl, a partner at Eclipse, a Palo Alto-based venture firm that has put itself at the center of the physical AI action. Eclipse has $1.3 billion to invest in physical AI, with a $591 million early-stage incubation fund and one more oriented toward growth startups.
Candela, a Swedish electric hydrofoil company, landed a 20-boat order with Norwegian operator Boreal. Meanwhile, Candela founder and CEO Gustav Hasselskog is stepping down, with Sofia Graflund taking over as CEO. Hermeus, a Los Angeles-based defense startup, raised $350 million with a $1 billion valuation. Sora Fuel, a sustainable aviation fuel startup, raised $14.6 million in a round co-led by Spero Ventures and Inspired Capital.
The talent war in the self-driving vehicle industry is having a twofold effect. Automakers will have a hard time holding on to engineers working on automated driving, leading to an exodus. Meanwhile, startups will need to raise even more money or get smarter about how those funds are used.
