Tesla's 2026 Model Y Sets New Safety Standard
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially recognized the 2026 Tesla Model Y as the first vehicle to meet its new benchmark for advanced driver assistance systems.
The updated safety rating criteria include four new pass-fail tests: automatic emergency braking for pedestrians, blind spot warning, blind spot intervention, and lane assist. These features are designed to assess a car's ability to prevent accidents and maintain safe driving practices.
According to NHTSA, the new benchmark rating applies to 2026 Tesla Model Y vehicles assembled on or after November 12, 2025. This milestone marks a significant step forward in vehicle safety, as it ensures that vehicles on the road meet rigorous standards for advanced driver assistance systems.
The NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) is responsible for conducting safety ratings for vehicles, including a battery of tests to determine how vehicles handle frontal and side crashes as well as rollover resistance, and crash avoidance. The addition of the four advanced driver assistance criteria was made in 2024 as part of an update to NCAP to include advanced driver assistance features.
TechCrunch has reached out to NHTSA to learn what other vehicles are in the queue for the new safety rating. We will update this article if the agency responds.
