Robotaxis Set to Roll Out in Europe
Uber and Pony AI have announced an expanded partnership to bring 2,000 robotaxis to four European cities, furthering the ambitions of both companies in the nascent robotaxi industry.
Ambitious Plans for Europe
This move illustrates the growing ambitions of both companies to carve out market share in the robotaxi industry. Uber has partnered with over 30 autonomous vehicle companies, including Pony AI, in the past few years. Pony AI, based in Guangzhou, China, has launched its services in four Chinese cities and has locked in partnerships with local transportation authorities to bring its robotaxis to European and Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar.
The robotaxis will be supplied by Pony AI, while Uber will provide its vast ride-hailing platform. Fleet management, including maintenance, cleaning, and charging, can be handled by a local provider.
- The robotaxi fleet may be owned by different partners depending on the market.
- This partnership represents a significant expansion of the companies' previous agreement, which focused on the Middle East, announced in May 2025.
- Earlier this year, Uber and Pony AI turned to Europe and announced plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia with local company Verne.
The companies have not shared a timeline for when these robotaxis will be deployed or named the cities in which they'll launch, saying only that details will be revealed in phases. However, the expanded partnership has clarified some of the terms, with Pony AI's 'joint-deployment model' getting a clearer path to commercial scale.
