Waymo Takes a Major Step Towards London Robotaxi Service
Waymo has begun testing its autonomous vehicles on public roads in London, marking a significant milestone in its plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in the city this year.
Autonomous Testing Underway
Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov announced the start of autonomous testing on LinkedIn, stating that the company's core driving AI is generalizing very well. However, for now, the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace equipped with Waymo's self-driving system have a human safety operator behind the wheel. The goal is to master local nuances and validate performance on UK roads before moving towards rider-only deployment.
Waymo's plans to launch its robotaxi service in 2026 depend on the U.K. government finalizing its approval process for those operations. The company has already established a presence in the UK, having acquired Latent Logic, a UK startup spun out of Oxford University's computer science department, in 2019. Waymo also launched an engineering hub in Oxford as part of the acquisition.
Competitive Landscape
Waymo is not alone in its ambitions to launch a robotaxi service in London. U.K.-based autonomous vehicle technology startup Wayve and Uber also plan to launch a fully driverless robotaxi service in London. Wayve, Uber, and Nissan signed an agreement in March to launch a pilot program in Tokyo by late 2026.
Waymo's robotaxis are already operational in 11 cities across the US, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company is also testing and preparing to launch in several other markets.
- London could be Waymo's first international commercial market, and the company will face competition in the city.
- Waymo has more than 3,000 robotaxis in its fleet, with the company likely to expand its fleet with the addition of new vehicles.
The robotaxis are equipped with Waymo's self-driving system, which uses a combination of sensors and machine learning algorithms to navigate the road.
- Waymo is investing in the country by hiring locally and establishing multiple AV service centers across London.
- The company is working with emergency services to build the foundation for its business in Europe.
