WhatsApp Calls Come to the Web
After years of being limited to the smartphone app or native desktop app, WhatsApp for Web is finally getting native call support.
This means users can now make and receive audio and video calls directly from their web browsers, just like they can on their phones and computers.
The Calls tab on the web interface will house your call history and favorites, just like on the smartphone and desktop apps.
In addition to call history and favorites, the web app will also support calling features like screen-sharing and reactions, which are already available on the desktop app.
New Calling Features
One of the most exciting new features is the ability to transfer calls from one device to another without hanging up. This means you can start a call on your desktop or web app and continue speaking on your phone.
Another useful upgrade is waiting rooms. When creating a call link, you can enable the "Require approval to join" option to create a waiting room for the meeting. This is a game-changer for people who host work calls on WhatsApp.
Other Improvements
WhatsApp is also introducing background noise suppression, which filters out noise in large places, making calls clearer and more enjoyable.
Additionally, the company said WhatsApp will start streaming video calls in high definition in the first few seconds of the call, eliminating the delay that used to occur.
Looking Ahead
As part of its broader efforts to make WhatsApp more versatile, the company is also opening up reservations for usernames. Once the username feature goes live, people will be able to use them to call other users across platforms.
This is a big step forward for WhatsApp, and we can't wait to see how users take advantage of these new features.
