WhatsApp Warns Users of Government Spyware
WhatsApp has taken swift action to protect its users, notifying around 200 individuals who downloaded a fake version of its messaging app that contained government spyware. The company accused Italian spyware maker SIO of creating the malicious app.
Malicious App Created by SIO
According to WhatsApp, its security team proactively identified the 200 users who may have downloaded the fake app, primarily in Italy. The company has taken steps to protect these users, logging them out and alerting them to the risks associated with downloading fake unofficial clients.
- WhatsApp has also encouraged the affected users to remove the fake app and download the official WhatsApp app.
SIO's History of Malicious Activity
SIO has a history of creating malicious apps, including fake versions of WhatsApp and customer support tools for cellphone providers. Last year, TechCrunch revealed that SIO was behind a series of malicious Android apps that contained its spyware, including the Spyrtacus malware.
- SIO's spyware has been linked to Italian authorities, who often collaborate with cellphone providers to send phishing links to customers on behalf of law enforcement.
WhatsApp's Response
WhatsApp has taken a strong stance against SIO's malicious activity, sending a formal legal demand to stop any such activity. The company has also alerted its users to the risks associated with downloading fake unofficial clients.
"Our priority has been protecting the users who may have been tricked into downloading this fake iOS app," said WhatsApp spokesperson Margarita Franklin.
A Year After the Paragon Scandal
This latest incident comes a year after WhatsApp alerted around 90 users that they had been targeted with spyware made by the U.S.-Israeli surveillance tech maker Paragon Solutions. WhatsApp's notification sparked a wide-ranging scandal across Italy, leading Paragon to cut ties with Italy's spy agencies.
- SIO's subsidiary, ASIGINT, develops government spyware for various clients, including Italian authorities.
Apple's Silence
Apple and SIO did not respond to a request for comment on the matter.
- WhatsApp's latest announcement serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting user privacy and security in the face of malicious activity.
