WWDC 2026: A Week of AI and Innovation
\ Apple's WWDC 2026 event kicked off yesterday at Apple Park, marking the start of a week packed with reveals about Siri AI, iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and more. The event also marked CEO Tim Cook's last with the company, as he hands over the reins to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus on September 1.
A Week of Fixes and Features
For the past two years, Apple has been racing to catch up in AI while frustrations with its core software quietly added up. Apple didn't say any of that on Monday, but the structure of its WWDC keynote said it for them, leading with fixes before features. This approach frames a better Siri as one item on a long list of improvements rather than the main event.
- Apple made the case for an improved experience with its longstanding Siri assistant, which it admitted faces greater expectations from users in the age of AI.
- With Google Gemini under the hood, Apple claims that the new Siri updates will make it more capable, conversational, compatible with visual intelligence, and it will be housed in a standalone app in addition to working across existing apps.
- Apple was adamant about its privacy-centric approach to AI, with Senior Vice President Craig Federighi stating, "We believe privacy in AI is non-negotiable."
New Features and Updates
To go along with its new Siri AI overhaul, the tech giant announced a slew of new Apple Intelligence updates across its apps, including:
- Tab management for Safari
- One-tap password updating
- Cross-app context awareness
- AI-powered reply suggestions in Messages
- Context from other apps like Mail and Messages mid-call
Apple said it collaborated with Google and the Gemini family of models to develop the next generation of Apple Foundation Models that power its integrated Apple Intelligence experiences.
AI-Driven Improvements
Apple is bringing new AI features to its Photos app, including:
- A new spatial "Reframe" feature to adjust the perspective of an image
- The "Extend" tool to expand images and adjust the aspect ratio
- An upgraded "Cleanup" tool to remove distractions with better quality and more realistic infill with generative AI
Other Notable Updates
- A new systemwide dictation experience built into the keyboard on iOS 27
- Developers can now partner with each other to provide access to different subscriptions for a lower bundled price
- Personalized recommendations for developers, powered by user interests and behavior
- AI updates to Apple's visual-scripting tool, Shortcuts, to make it easier to use
- Apple's Health app is adding perimenopause and menopause support to its existing cycle tracking feature
A New Era for Apple
As Tim Cook hands over the reins to John Ternus, the tech giant is poised to enter a new era of innovation and growth. With a focus on AI and user experience, Apple is well-positioned to continue its dominance in the tech industry.
