Android App Redesign Promises Faster, Smoother Experience
X has finally released a rebuilt Android app, which was in development for nearly a year. The new app is built from the ground up and promises to improve loading, scrolling, notifications, and more, according to the company.
Rebuilding from Scratch
The update has been a massive undertaking for X, with head of product Nikita Bier describing it as "one of the largest engineering projects" in the company's history. Bier noted that the new Android app was built on a clean Kotlin + Jetpack Compose stack, which has enabled the team to build new features at lightning speed.
"It's faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed," Bier wrote on X.
New Features and Improvements
The rebuilt Android app promises to bring several new features, including the video editor, react-with-video feature, cashtags, and custom timelines. However, some rough edges still need to be ironed out, including improving performance on older Android devices and adding support for Spaces, X's live audio feature.
Global Expansion
The Android release could potentially entice more users in global markets, where Android is the dominant smartphone platform, to either download or return to X. This is especially significant considering that X's platform neglect on Android was so severe that the app couldn't even load X posts when users clicked links.
Availability
Existing Android users can get the new X app by updating their existing app through the Google Play Store. The app is now available to download, and users can expect a faster, smoother, and more reliable experience.
