X Introduces AI-Powered Features to Enhance User Experience
Social media platform X is taking a significant step towards making its in-app experience more engaging and accessible with the launch of automatic translation and AI-powered photo editing. The features, powered by xAI's Grok models, aim to break down language barriers and enable users to edit images with natural language prompts.
The automatic translation feature, announced by X's head of product Nikita Bier, is rolling out worldwide, allowing users to toggle off automatic translation for specific languages. This move is a response to other social networks, such as Reddit, which have been experimenting with machine translation for years.
"We're rolling out auto-translate worldwide to give posts in any language global reach on X," said Bier. "The translations are powered by Grok and have improved substantially over the last couple of months." If users prefer to read in the original language, they can always turn off automatic translation.
The AI-powered photo editor, available on the iOS app, includes features like drawing, text tools, and a blur tool that can hide sensitive information. Moreover, users can ask Grok to edit an image with a natural language prompt, such as "display this photo as a painting in a museum," and Grok will generate that picture for them.
However, it's unclear whether the new AI-powered image editing feature will be restricted to paid users, following Elon Musk's criticism earlier this year. The company has already restricted the image generation feature to paying users, but it remains to be seen if this new feature will follow the same path.
Other companies, such as Google and Adobe, have introduced AI-powered features that let users describe image edits.
